Should I use Oil to Massage my Baby? If your reply is yes, then the query Is ”Which baby massage oil to prefer?”. Everyone have an opinion on which oil is the best for baby massage. Some parents prefer mineral oil while others prefer vegetable oil. Your decision which is the best oil for baby massage largely depends on your baby’s skin. If your baby has eczema, then it is advised to seek doctor suggestion.

There is huge list of oils of oils which are used in India for Baby Massage and in them there are certain creams & Oils which are not to be used on baby’s skin, whether or not your baby has eczema.

  • Olive Oil (Figaro Oil) contains high concentration of Oleic acid which damages the protective skin barrier on baby’s skin.
  • Mustard Oil as it has toxic effect on skin barrier leading to irritation and damages baby’s delicate skin
  • Unrefined peanut oil, because the protein present in oil can sensitize your baby’s skin. Sometimes even refined peanut oil is also not suggested as it is contaminated with unrefined Oil.
  • Aqueous Cream contain harsh detergent called sodium lauryl sulfate which causes irritation on baby’s skin and ultimately damages skin barrier.

Oils with high Linoleic acid (essential fatty acid) are gentler on baby’s skin. Linoleic acid helps to protect the barrier element of baby’s skin. Vegetable oils that contain high level of Linoleic acid include sunflower oil, grape seed oil, Sesame Oil.

If your baby has broken or dry skin or a topic eczema, then it is advised to avoid oils higher in oleic acid. Olive oil is high in oleic acid. Studies have revealed that olive oil when used on skin, damages the skin barrier and caused mild redness rashes even on skin with no history of sensitivity.

Oleic acid makes layers of baby’s skin more permeable and this permeability helps oil and water to get absorbed onto your baby’s skin hence oil and water is lost rather than trapped in. In case your baby’s skin is already dry and tender and oleic acid increases the moisture loss from it leading to dry skin.

Vegetable oils containing high proportion of oleic acid include:

  • Olive (Figaro) Oil
  • Mustard Oil
  • High-oleic sunflower seed oil

Vegetables oil labels does not list oleic acid/linoleic acid content but they list the proportions of polyunsaturated or monounsaturated fats. For your knowledge, there is a general guide

The vegetable oil that is higher in linoleic acid is higher in polyunsaturated fats and similarly vegetable oil that is higher in Oleic acid is higher in monounsaturated fats.

Prefer oil that is higher in polyunsaturated fats. Some oils have both Polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats, so sometimes it is not clear.

One of the other option is baby mineral oil (prefer perfume free). Mineral oil is derived from petroleum and petroleum based skin softener are effective and safe in treating skin problems such as dermatitis & eczema. But it is suggested in case your baby has eczema you should only prefer medical moisturizer recommended by doctor for massage.

There are two famous names in the market of Sesame oil for baby massage which are Daburlal tail and Mother Sparsh Lal tail.

When it comes to which is the best sesame based oil for baby massage? Then the simplest way is to check the content of Linoleic acid in them. The one which has the higher content is better one.

 

 

There are many evidences in Ayurveda supporting the use of sesame oil for baby massage.

After baby bath, baby’s skin will regain its normal color.
